More Home Loans Over 6% Than Under 3%
Existing home mortgage rates in the US are now more often over 6% than under 3%. The percentage of outstanding mortgages with interest rates of 6% or higher in the third quarter of 2025 was 21.2%, which was greater than the percentage of borrowers with rates below 3% (20.0%). Mortgage rates have stayed over 6% since September 2022, while easing from their 2025 top of 7.04% in January and settling into the low-6% range by year’s end.
