America’s Older Homes Face Challenges
As the country’s housing stock ages, homeowners in America’s oldest homes face challenges. “While older homes often offer unique character and a more accessible purchase price, buyers need to go in with their eyes open regarding long-term costs,” senior researcher Jonathan Jones of Construction Coverage tells Realtor.com. According to their research, homes constructed prior to 1940 are about 30 times more likely to be in poor condition and require nearly ten times as much ordinary annual care as new construction.
The median age of dwellings in the United States has increased gradually between 2000 and 2024, from 30 years at the beginning of the century to 43 years now. And homes are far older in some parts of the country. The oldest homes in the United States are found in Buffalo, New York, Pittsburgh, and New York City, with median ages of 66, 64, and 63 years, respectively.
